A 44-year-old deemed the world’s most-traveled man says he’s ready to return home to Calgary after visiting every country in the span of 23 years.
The journey started back in 1990, when then-21-year-old Mike Spencer Bown decided he wanted to visit every single country in the world. He wanted to take it a step further, though. (Via The Huffington Post)
Unlike others who have already visited every country in the world, Bown wanted to actually stay in each country to get a better understanding of its culture.
The Calgary Sun caught up with Bown while he was finishing up the last of his worldwide endeavor. He says while he got to see many different parts of the world, it has kept him from having a normal family life.
Bown’s travels took him to some of the world’s most dangerous countries, including Afghanistan and Iraq. He said the people there were extremely generous and added there’s more to those countries than their war-torn images.
In late 2010, Bown made headlines for his unexpected visit to the capital of Somalia. He was the country's first recreational visitor in more than two decades. He told Time the country began facing many serious problems when he started his voyage, but he still wanted to visit anyway.
That visit to Somalia was just one of many voyages Bown made in almost a quarter century. He says some of his fondest memories include learning to operate a sleigh while drunk in Russia and sitting face-to-face with gorillas in Rwanda. (Via Inquisitr)
Bown commemorated his last trip with a Guinness beer in Ireland. He says his entire adult life has been an adventure because of his journey.
