An air conditioner repair man was working at St. Ann Catholic Church in Arlington, Virginia when he said he heard loud noises from above the church kitchen.
When cops arrived, they found a man, William Barker, living in the church's attic.
Police said Barker used a rafter as a clothes hanger, had food and water in a cooler and even found a guitar. He said he hid a ladder in the attic with him, sliding ceiling tiles aside to get up and down.
Church member Mary Green told The Washington Post, "I had no clue about this, and I am a reasonably active church person."
Investigators say Barker admitted to squatting in the attic for three years.
Green believes the situation highlights, "the dreadful plight of homeless people."
Even so, she isn’t comfortable with “strange people around school.” That worry seems valid after officers noted Baker “has been arrested five times in the county, twice on accusations of burglarizing a church in 2013 and 2008. He was also charged with indecent exposure in 2007.”
Barker has been jailed, awaiting a mental health evaluation. He faces charges of unlawful entry, the Post reported.
