On Monday, April 15, 2013, two pressure cooker bombs exploded during the Boston Marathon, killing three people and injuring more than 200 others.
A review of photographs and surveillance video revealed two suspects in the attack. By Friday morning, April 19, the two suspects were identified as brothers Dzhokhar and Tamerlan Tsarnaev.
The Tsarnaev brothers killed a university police officer at MIT, carjacked an SUV and engaged in a gun battle with police in Watertown, Mass.
One police officer was injured in the Watertown battle. Tamerian Tsarnaev was shot multiple times and died after his brother Dzhokhar ran over him with the stolen SUV.
After a manhunt, Dzhokhar Tsarnaev was cornered and arrested.
Tsarnaev confessed to the bombing and was charged with 30 counts, 17 of which carried a maximum penalty of death. Despite confessing, Tsarnaev pleaded not guilty to all the charges.
