Seattle homicide detectives are investigating after human body parts were found in a recycling bin behind a home in the Central District neighborhood of Seattle.
>> UPDATE: Human remains in Seattle recycling bin likely those of missing mother, police say
The human remains were packaged and dumped in the bin near the 1600 block of 21st Avenue, Seattle police said.
Police officers were sent to investigate after a nearby homeowner reported finding suspicious items.
On Saturday evening, the King Co. medical examiner responded and confirmed the presence of likely human remains.
David Peterson, a neighbor, says he was surprised when he learned about the horrific scene just a few doors down.
He had just moved to the neighborhood a few months ago.
"I move to this quiet area and I'm enjoying the calmness of it all and then this happens," he said.
It also troubled neighbor Alemu Kassa.
"Humans remains?" asked Kassa. "That's shocking, you know. I don't know. Used to be a nice neighborhood."
The medical examiner's office says it will take "some time" before they have any more information to release.
Police are canvassing the neighborhood.
