Thanks to a dedicated caseworker and police officer, things are looking up for one homeless man.
For three years, John Helsinki, 62, slept on the streets of downtown Tampa, often in a cardboard box or underneath benches to avoid detection, according to WFTS.
But Officer Dan McDonald did spot Helsinki, and guided him to a local center for the homeless. There, Helsinki met case manager Charles Inman.
The officer and case worker helped Helsinki reestablish his identity by securing a new driver’s license and Social Security card. It was going through that process that Helsinki discovered a long-forgotten bank account.
Social Security checks had been automatically deposited into the account, and the available amount was enough for Helsinki to purchase permanent housing.
