Who wants to join up and "plank" for five hours? No takers? I didn't expect any.
In a move that is much more impressive than any of our workouts, 57-year-old former Marine George Hood performed a plank for more than five hours on Sunday in California. The official time was five hours, 15 minutes and 15 seconds, beating the record of four hours and 26 minutes that was set by a Chinese police officer in September.
According to NBC San Diego, Hood trained for nine months, about four to six hours a day, with at least 30 hours of planking thrown in every week. While he was performing the record, Hood asked for as many distractions as possible as a way to keep his mind off of what the time was. This included chatting with the support crew there to place ice chips under his achy elbows, concentrating on music blaring from the loudspeakers, and studying objects that spectators placed on the mat in front of him.
“There are injured Marines that come back from the fight who have suffered life-altering injuries, and the discomfort that I feel right now pales in comparison to that which they feel,” Hood said. “So we raise money to help them. We tend to forget about them sometimes. This helps raise awareness and draw attention to them – and I’m about that."
