A good Samaritan brought three severely injured kittens to the facility on Friday, officials at the SPCA of Brevard Adoption Center said.

The woman moved into a new home in Titusville last week. When she saw there was a friendly mother cat with her three kittens hanging around, so she began feeding them. Neighbors informed the new homeowner that they had also been feeding the cats since the previous resident moved out a month ago and left them behind.

The woman said Friday that the kittens and mother came by for their usual playtime and breakfast, but she noticed something very wrong with all three kittens. Their skin was red and their flesh was horribly burned, so the woman immediately took them to the SPCA Adoption Center to seek help.

“The kittens presented with severe chemical burns, consistent with a substance such as acid, on large portions of their bodies,” said SPCA Veterinarian Heather Les. “With this kind of trauma, there is a high risk for infection and other complications, so they aren’t out of the woods yet. We’ve started them on IV antibiotics, pain meds, and cleaned and scraped the damaged skin off.”

Despite the pain, the kittens appear to be in great spirits, officials said. The staff has named them Remo, Matilda and Harding, names that mean strong, resilient and brave.

So far, no culprits have been identified. Anyone with information is asked to contact authorities.
