A Florida couple is facing grand theft and misusing personal information charges as part of a plot to steal a purse.
They’re also accused of involving their 11-year-old stepdaughter in the crime.
Last month, surveillance cameras were rolling when a woman in a motorized scooter took her groceries but forgot her purse in a Walmart parking lot.
A few minutes later, the woman drives off, and the 11-year-old girl runs across the parking lot, grabs the purse and runs back.
“It looked like a little baby bag, so I’m like, ‘Mom, can I keep it? Can I keep it for my dolls and stuff?’” said the young girl to Channel 9.
“I look at the purse, I (expletive) was empty. I was like, ‘OK, you want to keep it? You can have it,’” said Daisy Rodriguez.
Rodriguez and her fiancé have bonded out of jail, and she admits, it’s her stepdaughter on tape.
“It’s funny, you know, I’ve never been arrested before,” Rodriguez said.
She said Channel 9 was the first to give her the full details, including a list of valuables the victim said she lost inside the stolen purse.
Rodriguez swears the only thing inside the purse was a lighter, but police said the purse was full of valuables. They said she went to a Dollar General, where she filled up three shopping carts and paid with someone else’s food stamp card.
“If they’re saying they have video of it, they have the wrong person,” Rodriguez said.
The child is not facing charges.
