Just an hour after his birth, a baby boy in Broward County died from the drug flakka, our news partners at WPTV report.
This is the first baby in South Florida to die from flakka.
According to police reports, the baby’s mother was hospitalized for more than 4 weeks while pregnant, but refused prenatal care. She was released on June 29 and gave birth to her son about a week later, according to NBC Miami.
The medical examiner confirms the baby was born nine weeks premature and "died with flakka in his system," NBC Miami reports. He was only 3 pounds and 2 ounces.
"It's beyond comprehension. It's unbelievable," Dr. Nabil El Sanadi, CEO of North Broward Hospital District, said to NBC Miami. "To have a mom that's pregnant actually use the drug is illogical, it's negligent, it's senseless. It's a tragedy."
