In case you missed it (or were working productively Friday), Facebook announced it is rolling out six new emoji (smiley face) icons that can be used in place of 'likes' on updates.
The rollout started in Ireland Friday, and one person wrote about the first day for Mashable.
First things first: The proper term for the emojis on Facebook is the Facebook Reactions feature.
Second, to use the feature, users must "long tap" (hold) the 'like' button to "be greeted by an emotional Rolodex," Marie Boran says on Mashable.
While the emojis can be used on posts, they cannot be used and returned in comments, she says.
And while Facebook's latest feature was rolled out to counteract the passiveness and perceived inappropriateness (i.e., 'liking' a status about a tragedy) of its universal thumbs-up, Boran says it still didn't feel appropriate to use an emoji on an update about a friend's relationship ending.
Still, the use of emojis is slowly but surely finding its place for the right moments and "already feels normal," according to Boran.
