Simon Rowe has had his own brush with homelessness, and now he wants to do something about it.
According to his story posted on a GoFundMe page, Rowe handed a homeless man sleeping on the street $20 in Melbourne, Australia.
“His eyes lit up, he smiled and was so grateful. He shook my hand, thanked me again with a smile,” wrote Rowe. “When I got home, I told my family what had happened and tears flowed down my face.”
He says he knows the harsh realities of homelessness. At one point in his life, he fell short on rent and was evicted.
Rowe, now a successful businessman, came up with the idea to create a sleeping bus, where homeless people can seek shelter during the night.
“The least we can do is provide safe overnight accommodation to people sleeping rough in Australia, until they get back on their feet,” wrote Rowe.
Each bus is equipped with 22 individual sleep pods, two toilets, 22 personal item lockers, under-bus storage, eight pet kennels and a security system.
So far, the GoFundMe page has raised over $46,000. Rowe estimates one bus costs about $50,000 to build.
