A balcony on an apartment building in Berkeley, California, collapsed early Tuesday, killing five people and injuring eight, according to The Associated Press.
Many of the injured have life-threatening wounds, police said.
Police don't yet know what caused the incident, saying only that the fourth-floor balcony of a mixed-use development had disintegrated. Officials also did not provide the names of the victims or what they were doing at the time of the fall, around 1 a.m. PDT. The Irish government, however, said the victims included "a number" of young Irish residents.
