The Army has announced that any soldier can attend Ranger School, regardless of gender. Earlier this year, women were allowed to attempt to earn the elite Ranger tab for the first time ever in an effort to determine if women could meet the same standards to become a Ranger. Out of the 19 women who attempted to make it through, two of them, Capt. Kristen Griest and 1st Lt. Shaye Haver, were able to complete the course and become the first women ever to earn the Ranger tab. One of the original 19 is still attending Ranger School after being recycled and has just entered the third and final part of the grueling course, the swamp phase.
The Army says that the qualifications for attending Ranger School will not change, and neither will the standards to graduate. But while women are able to attend Ranger School and earn the right to wear the Ranger tab, they are still not able to serve with the 75th Ranger Regiment, nor can they serve with any infantry, armor or special operations unit.
Students who pass Ranger School are not automatically eligible to join the 75th Ranger Regiment, which has additional qualifications and requirements to join. The Navy, however, has announced that women who can pass BUD/SEAL training will also be allowed to join one of the SEAL teams.
