A plane flying from Georgia crashed into a house in southeastern Michigan, killing the pilot and two people aboard, authorities said.

Plane owner David S. Compo — an experienced, licensed pilot — his wife Michele and their college-age son Dawson were killed in the crash when their private plane smashed into a home half a mile north of the New Hudson airport, the Home Builders Association of Southeastern Michigan said late Saturday in a release, according to The Detroit News.

Compo had flown to Canton on Dec. 29, and the family was returning home Saturday to Michigan when the crash occurred, the home builders group said.

Five people inside the two-story house avoided injury in the crash Saturday, but fire severely damaged the home in Lyon Township, 40 miles northwest of Detroit.

Oakland County Sheriff Mike Bouchard confirmed the deaths of three people in the plane, a single-engine Piper PA-24.

It had been flying to the New Hudson airport from Cherokee County Regional Airport in Canton, The Detroit News reported, citing FlightAware.com.

The plane is owned by Aircom LLC, based in Novi, Michigan. The company shares an address with Compo Builders Inc., the News reported.
