After more than two months delay, work gets started on Decatur’s MARTA overpass mural this week.
The project at West Trinity Place and Atlanta Avenue was mostly delayed because lead paint was discovered on the steel support beams. The old paint was removed, the lead abated, thus setting the stage for the first layer, called elastomeric. This coat is sprayed on and prevents the finished mural from cracking due to repeated train rumblings.
The artists are Felici Asteinza and Joey Fillastre, both 29 and both 2009 graduates of Florida State University. Their final design was chosen in part from two community sessions held earlier last summer. They estimate completing the mural will take 30 days, and they plan working seven days a week.
During that time at least one lane of Trinity will be closed to traffic.
According to Linda Harris, Decatur’s assistant director of community and economic development, the project is part of the cultural arts master plan dating to 2009.
Recent art projects include the stylistic painting of 25 traffic signal boxes, mostly throughout downtown, and the installation of five outdoor sculptures in Oakhurst.
