Three of the five Westlake High School students charged in last November's attack that left a classmate with a broken jaw and nose were convicted Tuesday in Fulton County Juvenile Court.
Their names have not been released because they are juveniles. Attorney Esther Panitch, representing the victim, said two of the three were convicted of aggravated battery, while the other was found guilty of misdemeanor fighting.
Sentencing follows on Friday, but the victim's mother said she's not expecting the youths to receive any punishment beyond probation.
Meredith, who requested that her surname be withheld to protect her son's anonymity, said only one of the three youths demonstrated any remorse.
"It didn't appear that they understood the gravity of the situation," she said.
Meredith's son transferred from Westlake to a school in north Fulton roughly an hour from the single parent's Palmetto home.
"I drive two hours every morning where I used to drive about 30 minutes round trip," she said.
Her son, now a senior, is still dealing with the repercussions of the attack, reverting into the shell he had shown signs of outgrowing before the attack, she said.
"He's literally hiding in his room every day," Meredith told The Atlanta Journal-Constitution. "For the most part, he's tried to put it behind him, but it's tough."
Fulton County District Attorney Paul Howard announced after the attack that would seek to try the defendants, ages 14 to 16 at the time, as adults, but Judge Belinda Edwards refused to remand the youths.
