ATHENS — The University of Georgia is teaming up with the University of Pennsylvania to develop a more extensive database of various pathogens.

The hope is the database will make diagnosing and treating ill patients easier.

The project is being funded by a five-year, $14.6 million contract from the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases, part of the U.S. National Institutes of Health.

UGA gets $4.4 million of the money.

The database was originally developed to track the genetics of the most severe form of human malaria and has been expanded to include 27 disease-causing organisms and their origins. Now, scientists hope to make it more complete to help prevent and treat outbreaks of different diseases.
