Two women have been charged with stealing from residents of assisted living facilities in Cobb and Cherokee counties.

Candace Janet Ballard, 31, and Jayne Cherelle Phillips, 23, both of Woodstock, are accused of taking jewelry, credit cards and computer equipment from residents as they visited the facilities to find placement for an elderly relative, according Sgt. Dana Pierce of the Cobb County Police Department. He said the incidents first came to light after a report of a theft at the Heritage at Brookstone Assisted Living facility in Acworth.

Pierce said that as the women toured the facilities, one of them would enter living quarters while the residents were out and steal personal belongings. Most of the victims were in their 80s and 90s, he said.

Both women were arrested Oct. 30. on three counts of burglary and two counts of credit card fraud. During the arrest, he said, police recovered stolen jewelry, computer equipment and items believed purchased with stolen credit cards from the women’s Woodstock residence.

Both women are being held at the Cobb County jail on $16,720 bond.

Pierce said police are trying to identify victims so the stolen items can be returned.
