Two MARTA veterans are the sole finalists in the search for a new chief executive to run the metro Boston transportation system, according to media reports.

The website for the Dedham (Mass.) Transcript, a Boston-area newspaper, says retiring MARTA general manager Beverly Scott and Dwight Ferrell, MARTA’s deputy general manager, have been publicly named as the finalists to take over the top spot of the Massachusetts Bay Transportation Authority. The bus and rail system is the nation’s fifth largest.

The MBTA search committee, which over the past year has screened more than 100 candidates, will make a decision after the board conducts a public interview Monday with Scott and Ferrell, the newspaper reports.

Scott’s decision to step down created a vacancy at MARTA that the board is close to filling. Ferrell, identified publicly as a candidate to replace Scott, was not among the two finalists MARTA announced last week.

The next MARTA chief will be either Steve Bland of Pittsburgh or Keith Parker of San Antonio. The MARTA board could make a decision in about a week on who will run the nation’s ninth-largest public transportation system.
