Q: How does it happen that there are schools in DeKalb County that are part of Atlanta Public Schools? — Bill Boyd, Newnan
A: Atlanta's boundaries overlap DeKalb County in the central eastern portion of the city. Since the city is the local jurisdiction, it supersedes the county. People living there are city residents and pay city taxes, including for Atlanta Public Schools.
Q: In the article about the Atlanta Eagle bar raid, I noted that two of the officers listed had previously been accused of lying and fired for this action. Why were they re-hired? Also, did any of these officers lie under oath? — David Hedrick, Chamblee
A: The officers – James Menzoian and Brandon Jackson – were still on the force during the Atlanta Eagle bar raid in September 2009. They were not fired and rehired. They were fired the day before the Eagle report was released in late June of this year. The Atlanta Police Department said they previously lied in testimony before a federal magistrate in an unrelated drug case in October 2009. The judge said their testimony wasn't credible. The 343-page report, released in late June, detailed how the two officers were among 16 officers who destroyed evidence or lied when questioned about the raid at the Atlanta Eagle bar.
