Q: Why does the Transportation Security Administration have to rescreen arriving international passengers after they clear customs at Hartsfield-Jackson International Airport?
-- Robert Larchevesque, Woodstock
A: Whether they are catching a connecting flight or leaving the airport, arriving international passengers must access the secure area of Hartsfield-Jackson International Airport in order to do so, TSA spokesman Jon Allen told Q&A on the News. This procedure will change next year when the new Maynard H. Jackson Jr. International Terminal opens, eliminating the baggage recheck and security screening for passengers whose final destination is Atlanta.
Q: I notice President Barack Obama is signing with his left hand. How many U.S. presidents have been left-handed?
-- Robert Hand, Marietta
A: Since World War II, six presidents, including Obama, have been left-handed. George H.W. Bush, Bill Clinton, Gerald Ford, Ronald Reagan and Harry Truman are the others. The Washington Post noted that before that period, few presidents would have been officially left-handed because many left-handed individuals were taught to use their right hand. "The only known left-handed president before the turn of the 20th century was James Garfield," it reported, adding that he was ambidextrous.
