The Georgia Gwinnett College building that was damaged by an explosion Monday will be closed through Sunday and maybe weeks longer.
Also, GGC official Sloan Jones told Channel 2 Action News on Tuesday that structural and integrity engineers are checking out Building A after an explosion in a women’s restroom.
“It could possibly be for weeks,” Jones told Channel 2. “Again, we want to be sure everything is safe.”
Investigators believe an unknown spark or flame may have triggered an explosion of built-up gases in a sewer line at GGC. A food service contract worker was injured in the explosion, which occurred about 8 a.m. Monday. No explosive devices were found.
“Would you feel comfortable, going back into the building?” GGC student Naisha Notice told Channel 2. “Once everything is cleared up, I’ll feel comfortable returing to the building.”
Gwinnett County firefighters found the food service worker with burns and potential blast-related injuries. The worker was taken to Grady Hospital and is expected to survive. There were no other injuries.
Classes continued in other GGC buildings Tuesday.
However, Building B was evacuated Tuesday morning when an electrical outlet shorted, the school said on its Twitter account. This building was cleared for re-entry at 9:30 a.m., according to another Twitter post.
Classes normally held in building A have moved to other locations.
“The building will not be reoccupied until I receive written clearance concerning its safety from the building’s owner, The University Financing Foundation,” University President Stas Preczewski said Monday in a statement.
