The Sandy Springs Police Department is denouncing a recent ranking which lists the city as unsafe.
The police department's pushback comes after the ranking was published by Only In Your State, listing the city as one of the "12 Most Dangerous Places in Georgia after Dark." Sandy Springs ranked third with Douglasville and College Park rounding out the top two spots.
The publication devised the rankings from FBI data based on crimes per 10,000 capita.
Sandy Springs officials criticized the legitimacy of the ranking in a Facebook post Sunday.
“Anyone can post, but not all claims are validated,” the post said.
Communications officials also referenced the city's 2014-2015 crime statistics report, which highlights a 5 percent reduction in overall crime during 2014-2015 versus 2012-2013. The report also states violent crime fell 18 percent in 2014-2015, and property crimes were down by 4.5 percent.
FBI crime statistics showed that Atlanta’s violent crime rate was more than 30 times higher than Sandy Springs’ rate during that year, according to the city’s report.
