Sandy Springs interchange named for ‘founding mother’ Galambos

The late Eva Galambos, “founding mother” and first mayor of Sandy Springs, has been honored by having the interchange of Ga. 400 and Northridge Road named for her.

By proclamation of the Georgia House of Representatives, the crossroads at the north end of the city is now the Mayor Eva Cohn Galambos Memorial Interchange. The Georgia Department of Transportation posted signs for the interchange recently.

Dr. John Galambos, the late mayor’s husband, received a copy of the proclamation and a miniature version of the highway sign during a ceremony at a recent Sandy Springs City Council meeting.

Eva Galambos worked 30 years to get the General Assembly to approve the incorporation of her home community, a feat finally accomplished in 2005. She is credited with having helped launch the movement to incorporate cities in Fulton County.

Galambos served two terms as mayor, stepping down in 2013. She died of cancer at the age of 87 in April 2015.
