Saar, a Roswell Police Department K9 diagnosed with severe allergies after her acquisition, will be retired to her handler after three years’ service.

The transfer of ownership will save the city $500 a year in immunotherapy treatments, according to a staff report to the City Council.

“Due to the ongoing health concerns of Saar and her continued treatment, it is in the best interest of the city and Saar to retire her from active service and transfer ownership to her former handler,” staff said.

The City Council agreed to sell Saar to Davis Gardner, who resigned his position as police officer on Feb. 2. The city will be reimbursed $3,400 for Saar; the money will go toward a replacement canine for the 5-year-old Belgian Malinois.

According to the Roswell police Facebook page, Saar was born June 15, 2013, came to the United States from the Netherlands in November, 2014, and with her handler Gardner was trained in a six-week K9 certification course that included tracking, substance detection, criminal apprehension and evidence search.
