The Roswell City Council will be looking into development options for an important piece of downtown property after the first of the year.

City officials said they expect to close on the $4.85 million purchase of the Roswell Plaza Shopping Center around Jan. 18, following approval of the purchase by city council members. The property is near the intersection of Alpharetta and Norcross streets and is close to the Canton Street commercial district.

Downtown Development Authority Chair Monica Hagewood said the goal is to encourage mixed-use development while extending the success of the Canton Street corridor across Alpharetta Highway. The DDA will lead the effort to seek redevelopment proposals for the shopping plaza, with the council directing actual redevelopment.
