Henry County Animal Control has issued a 45-day rabies alert for the Lake Dow North area around Edward Drive after May 22 incident in which a raccoon was killed by a dog. The raccoon’s remains were taken to the Georgia Public Health Laboratory and test results came back positive for the rabies virus.

Residents living within this area should make sure that all of their companion animals are up to date on their rabies vaccinations, administered by a licensed veterinarian, and if not, should have companion animals vaccinated as soon as possible. Additionally, residents should be vigilant of the behavior of not only their own pets, but also of surrounding wildlife (e.g. foxes, skunks) that are acting in an unusual manner.
