Qualifying is set this week in Cumming for the special election to fill the unexpired term of Post 1 City Council member Rupert Sexton.

Prospective candidates can qualify from 9 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Tuesday through Thursday in City Clerk Jeff Honea’s office at Cumming City Hall, 100 Main St. Candidates must be at least 21, have lived within the city for at least a year and must be a registered voter. The qualifying fee is $180.

Whoever is elected June 16 will fill the unexpired portion of Sexton’s term beginning July 21 and will serve through Dec. 31, 2017. Sexton, who was first elected in 1970, retired May 1. He had been the subject of an impeachment investigation involving his allegedly releasing city employee health insurance information on social media.
