The Powder Springs City Council is expected to consider an ordinance in August to increase pension benefits for themselves and Mayor Patricia Vaughn that would become effective Sept. 1.

That meeting will be 7 p.m. Aug. 17 in the Council Chambers, Community Development building, 4488 Pineview Drive.

Already, the council voted 5-0 June 1 to increase their pension benefits by $7 more a month from $48 to $55 monthly for each year of service.

However, this ordinance would amend the Georgia Municipal Employee Benefit System master plan document.

The city’s policy is two terms or eight years of service for an elected official to qualify for pension benefits, according to City Clerk Kelly Axt.

The city has four former council members receiving their pension benefits, she added.

Also, Vaughn, Councilwoman Rosalyn Neal and Councilman Al Thurman have met their service requirement and would be eligible, Axt said.

The pension plan is offered through the Georgia Municipal Association.
