About a dozen homeowners from a Powder Springs subdivision expressed their concerns Monday to Powder Springs Mayor Patricia Vaughn and the city council about a new city requirement for them to clean two detention ponds for $13,000 this year.

Previously, the city had been paying for maintenance of the city’s 113 detention ponds.

For Evergreen Park subdivision on Elliott Road, the $13,000 fee for the 54 homeowners is the same fee Vaughn said was charged to her Country Walk subdivision.

Vaughn said Country Walk’s follow-up fee will be $1,500 annually for detention pond maintenance.

Since Evergreen Park has a homeowners’ association, City Manager Pam Conner told the residents they can find another company, but the HOA has to clean the ponds annually.

Yet the residents Monday said their letters, received last week from the city, made no mention of an option for them to find their own pond cleaner.

In April, Conner told The Atlanta Journal-Constitution “a sample letter” from the city said the initial fee would be $163 for each homeowner during the first year with $96 annually for follow-up cleanings.
