A man was shot and wounded late Thursday at a northwest Atlanta gas station after he defended the honor of a female companion, police said.

The incident happened just before midnight at a Chevron station on Joseph E. Lowery Boulevard.

Atlanta police Capt. Adam Lee III told the AJC that the 20-year-old victim was shot by a man who had allegedly spoken to his female companion "in an offensive manner."

The victim "stood up for her and told the guy not to talk to her like that and that started an argument between the two males," Lee said. "The unidentified male then went out to his vehicle and got a handgun and shot the victim in the wrist and in the leg."

The victim, whose name has not been released, was taken to Grady Memorial Hospital in stable condition.

Lee said the gunman fled in a late-model Ford Expedition driven by a woman.
