A visually impaired man who accidentally fell onto the tracks at a MARTA station is recovering from his injuries thanks to some alert passengers.
MARTA spokeswoman Alisa Jackson said the incident happened at the Civic Center Station Tuesday night.
"He was going northbound and he heard the southbound train coming, so he thought the train was there," Jackson said.
Other passengers on the platform spotted the man and alerted the train operator to stop before the approaching train could hit him.
"We are very thankful for our other alert customers who were paying attention.
MARTA police were nearby and pulled the man out.
The 39-year-old man was hurt in the fall and taken to the hospital, but MARTA said the people on the platform prevented the man from suffering much more serious injuries.
MARTA is reviewing video of the incident. The agency recently launched a program to help people who are visually impaired maneuver train stations to safely use MARTA.
