Dozens of state and local law enforcement officers will take part in a motorcade up I-985 to Gainesville Thursday afternoon to mark the beginning of a three-month "Operation Thunder" initiative to combat drunk driving, speeding and other unsafe driving practices in Hall County.
The 75-car motorcade will begin around 3:30 p.m., and will include Georgia State Patrol troopers, Hall County sheriff's deputies and Gainesville police, as well as deputies and officers from neighboring counties.
Operation Thunder, which was started by the Governor's Office of Highway Safety in 2007, concentrates patrols along interstates, state routes and rural roads in a particular area during a 90-day crackdown on aggressive and impaired drivers.
"The Thunder task force goal in Gainesville and Hall County will be to intercept high-risk drivers here before they become involved in injury and fatality crashes," said Harris Blackwood, director of the Governor's Office of Highway Safety.
Harris called Thursday's 75-car motorcade "the first and only warning to Hall County speeders and drunk drivers."
