North Decatur Square, the mixed-use development planned for just outside Decatur, featuring a 365 By Whole Foods store, passed two big hurdles last week. The DeKalb County Planning Commission approved developer S.J. Collins’ requests for zoning changes, and the project received official approval from the Decatur Heights Neighborhood Association.

The proposed Church Street/North Decatur Road project, featuring approximately 285 apartments, comes before DeKalb’s Board of Commissioners Sept. 27.

Decatur Heights with 575 residences in northeast Decatur has been particularly active in recent years hosting multiple conversations and meetings with developers. It’s the area within city limits immediately impacted by three developments just outside Decatur that between this year and fall 2018 will bring 1,545 apartments online.

“We’re excited to see the area redeveloping,” said DHNA President Deanne Thomas. “We always look to partner with the developer for the good outcome for the community. In this case [Collins] did everything we asked.”

Collins agreed to the installation of three thermoplastic pedestrian crosswalks; installation of signage warning drivers not to block Church Street and Sycamore Drive; installation of either a traffic signal or pedestrian crossing beacon on Church near Milscott Drive and upgraded coordinated signals for Church Street.
