A Norcross man who contends he had a seizure and did not try to flee from a multi-vehicle accident in Marietta has surrendered to authorities and has been jailed on $20,000 bond.

Garrett Andrew Hamlin, 24, was being held Friday in Cobb County Jail, charged with failing to stop for an accident, improper lane change, driving too fast for conditions and driving on a suspended or revoked license, according to the Cobb County Sheriff’s Office.

Marietta police have said Hamlin was fleeing from an accident when he crashed, but the driver said he has a medical history of epilepsy and believes he had a grand mal seizure at the time of the wreck. In an interview with the AJC, Hamlin said he did not remember the accident and woke up in the hospital.

Police said a white Ford F-250 driven by Hamlin was heading east on South Marietta about noon Monday when it struck a black Ford F-250 also eastbound on the same street.

Hamlin’s truck continued eastward and crossed the grass center median into the westbound lanes, where it collided with a blue 2005 Dodge Caravan and a gold 2001 Mitsubishi Galant before veering off the road and hitting a tree, police said.

Hamlin was taken to Wellstar Kennestone Hospital, Marietta. He was kept there overnight and released to go home, with the understanding that he later would turn himself in. Hamlin surrendered to authorities Thursday afternoon.
