With an annexation master plan approved last week, Decatur’s next step is sending that plan, the annexation map and resolutions from both the city commission and Decatur school board to all members of the General Assembly who represent Decatur.

“We will then follow up,” City Manager Peggy Merriss wrote in an email to the AJC, “to try and get a sponsor [for an annexation bill].” She said she wouldn’t be surprised if the current map gets a few cosmetic “tweaks,” but hopes the plan remains “largely intact.” She did say that if the annexation areas are changed by the legislature “in any significant way … [there is a] “possibility … annexation would not be pursued…”

Merriss said city records show that Decatur’s last major annexation was in 1937.
