Controversy over a residential property being used for public events led to the Henry County Board of Commissioners voting April 18 to set new guidelines for hosting special events.

The amended ordinance will allow for one special event per month and five per calendar year at a site in a residential-agricultural zoning district. The previous ordinance allowed a unlimited number of events as long as the appropriate permit was received for each one. A specific location on Rocky Creek Road has been used nearly every weekend for the past year, according to neighbors who spoke out in favor of the stricter rules, saying that the quality of life in their neighborhood has suffered tremendously because of these activities.

The owner of the property in question did not speak at this meeting but told the Zoning Advisory Board in January that he is using the property for weddings and charity events. He has appealed the ZAB’s denial of his conditional use request.
