Something new, for the first time in years, is coming to Auburn Avenue.
A shiny new set of tracks has been placed along the aging avenue that will soon carry the Atlanta Streetcar.
And with it will come thousands of tourists. But for those who live, work, play and invest in Auburn Avenue, the streetcar project is the latest venture that they hope will bring renewed prosperity to the crumbling street that was once known as the “the richest Negro street in the world.”
With the streetcar in mind, Auburn is undergoing a transformation. Trendy new shops are being planned. Several churches are developing master plans to position themselves on the street. The Atlanta Police Department has increased patrols in hopes of getting rid of the rampant drug, prostitution and gambling issues on the street.
“The ongoing construction made it tough on us for a while, but I never had second thoughts about the project,” said Chef Will Brown, owner of Will’s Way Creole Kitchen. “The potential here is great.”
But not everyone has been pleased with the process. Read about the hoped-for renaissance on one of Atlanta’s best-known streets, this Sunday in The Atlanta Journal-Constitution and on myajc.com.
