The Locust Grove City Council voted at its Jan 7 regular meeting to approve a resolution establishing a new policy for public comment during meetings.

A maximum 10-minute general comment time was set, with individual speakers limited to three minutes each. City officials said that the move was to codify the same guidelines the council had been following for years, and that other nearby jurisdictions’ policies were considered in the process. The council will maintain the ability to expand the public comment time at a certain meeting by majority vote.

A variety of issues requiring council action, such as the budget adoption each year and nearly every zoning matter, require separate public hearings that allow 30 minutes of comment for each side. Those situations are not affected by this policy.
