The Lawrenceville city council on Monday approved portions of the site plan for a new Speedway gas and convenience store at 3120 Sugarloaf Parkway.

Based on the city’s planning commission’s recommendations, the plan is approved with the understanding Speedway will plant 16 trees and 48 shrubs within the 10-foot landscape strip, and provide compliance of the red accent striping along the outside canopy. Speedway will also be required to indicate the location of one off-street loading space along with the proposed 20 parking spaces.

The city council heard opposition to the Speedway from Bernie Kida, HOA president of Tanners Point, a nearby subdivision with 86 homes. Kida expressed concern that the neighborhood has been opposed to a gas station in this location since 1997. Lawrenceville City Councilman Tony Powell acknowledged Kida’s concerns and explained the council was doing all it could within the limits of the law to place restrictions on the new Speedway.

Speedway will return to the council next month for further site approval of outdoor storage and signage.
