The Johns Creek City Council has reinstated the rental program and approved a new rental category with lower base fees for small groups at the Mark Burkhalter Amphitheater at Newtown Park.

The new small-group, low-impact base rentals are $250 per event for Johns Creek residents, not-for-profit organizations and schools, and $1,000 per event for Johns Creek for-profit and commercial entities, according to a staff agenda report. Fees otherwise are $500 to $4,000 per event for Johns Creek entities, depending on the user and if of low or high impact.

To qualify for small group, low-impact fees, a renter must have fewer than 150 participants; hold its event between 10 a.m. and 8 p.m., including set-up and breakdown; use amplified sound no more powerful than the in-house sound system; and not use other park facilities, such as fields or pavilions.

The council acted after staff reported 37 amphitheater rental requests in 2018 but only three actual bookings, all for high-impact events. High costs were cited by several who declined to rent.
