Johns Creek city officials are considering opening up the city’s Newtown Park Amphitheater to rental by private groups and individuals.

The Johns Creek City Council heard at Monday’s work session that numerous inquiries have come in about renting the 10,600 square-foot open-air amphitheater since it opened last year. City manager’s staff is recommending a base rate of $2,000 for non-profit groups and $2,500 for for-profit and commercial groups per event, with additional charges for such things as a damage deposit, cleaning fee and equipment rental. Staffers said five such rentals would cover the facility’s annual anticipated maintenance costs.

After the discussion, staff was asked to check on whether the rental rates were in line with similarly-sized private venues, said City spokesman Doug Nurse. The proposal could come back for discussion at the Feb. 23 meeting.
