The woman reportedly shot by Sheriff Victor Hill earlier this month told a Gwinnett County police detective Thursday it was an accident, the woman’s father told The Atlanta Journal-Constitution.
“The detective got a statement from my daughter after the tube was removed,” Ernest McCord said Friday.
Gwenevere McCord remains in intensive care in Gwinnett but was able to speak for the first time on Thursday to her family and police investigators. McCord spoke to a detective for about 15 minutes with her parents, brother, aunt and 22-year-old son present.
“He was mainly trying to follow up with her about what happened,” McCord said. “She told him what she had said already to the paramedics that it was an accident. The detective asked her if she thought the shooting was done on purpose but she said ‘no way.’ It was a sigh of relief because I always thought that was the case. It was good we were all there because we were able to hear the same thing at the same time.”
Earlier in the day, Gwenevere McCord surprised her dad as he was hanging clothes in her hospital closet by asking him “where have you been?” It was the first words he’s heard from his daughter in more than three weeks.
“It was a surprise,” McCord said of the emotional moment. “For her to say something like ‘Where have you been?’ We had been sitting all night doing our prayers.”
