Gwinnett County law enforcement officers were among the mourners who went to Dallas last week to honor the five officers who were killed following a Black Lives Matter protest.
Thirteen police officers and deputies from Gwinnett made the trip to salute their fallen brothers, and a few spoke with Channel 2 Action News about the memorial service.
“I was a little bit sad. A little angry and confused,” Officer Seung Suk with the Lilburn Police Department told Channel 2.
Many of the officers carried the weight of the tragedy home with them.
“It’s a rough reminder that sometimes you might put on the uniform that morning and not be able to put your head on the pillow that night,” Suk said.
Support from the public, however, helped lift the officers’ spirits, Gwinnett County Sheriff’s Deputy Sean Stephens said.
“We would be outside,” Stephens said, “and a civilian would stop us and hug us and say, ‘Thank you. We love you.’ And that’s incredible.”
The group returned home Sunday morning to the news of the death of three police officers in Baton Rouge.
“I hoped it would be over, but unfortunately it’s not,” Stephens said.
