A Clayton County business owner, hoping to have a gaping sinkhole in his parking lot filled, says he’s getting the runaround from both county and state authorities.

Gladys Cabani, an employee of CPS Auto Emission and Tires on Tara Boulevard, said the hole in the business’ parking lot is so big it scares away customers and her boss is losing money.

“They scared,” she told Channel 2 Action News. “He had lost some kind of business because people are afraid to pull in.”

Chuck Golden, who owns the property, says the sinkhole first appeared six months ago and it has since gotten bigger.

Golden said it’s a hazard to children walking in the area.

“I’m surprised that concrete [is] holding up over there,” he said.

Golden said either state transportation or county workers built a pipe to run water from a creek under Tara Boulevard and the piping on his property gave out, causing the sinkhole.

“They used metal that just wouldn’t hold up,” he said.

A Clayton County representative told Channel 2 the county and Georgia Department of Transportation are not responsible for connecting the corrugated pipe to a state transportation project.

Golden, who is consulting an attorney, is not satisfied with that answer.

“I want whoever is in charge of this to come and fix it,” he said.

Golden said he could fill the sinkhole but he’s afraid of getting sued if the water from the creek backs up and floods.
