It is often said that distracted driving is just as dangerous as drunk driving. From texting while driving to eating while driving, it’s easy to see that when we aren’t entirely focused on the road, our driving skills are vastly diminished. Unfortunately, as you drive to work this morning, I’m sure you’ll see plenty of people both texting and eating behind the wheel. I can’t offer a safer way to text and drive, but perhaps I can help people become safer when they eat and drive. After much research and with the help of noted fast food expert Johnny Kielbasa, I have come up with a list of both the safest foods to eat while driving and the least safe foods to eat while driving. Below are the results from various fast food chains around the Atlanta area.

McDonalds

Safest item: Chicken McNuggets. As long as you don’t dip, you can pop these babies at will with limited distraction.

Least safe item: Big breakfast with hot cakes. Delicious, yes, but perhaps the most labor intensive fast food item to eat.

Burger King

Safest item: French Toast Sticks. If you forgo the syrup these tasty fried sticks are fairly easy to eat while driving.

Least safe item: Angry Whopper. What makes it so good is what makes it so dangerous. Lots of messy toppings can cause havoc while driving.

Taco Bell

Safest item: Loaded Potato Griller. Small, self-contained makes great road food.

Least safe item: Smothered Burrito. Knife and fork needed. Enough said.

Chick-Fil-A

Safest item: Chicken Minis. These can be consumed in one bite with limited distraction.

Least safe item: Chicken Soup. Soup should be consumed at home, not on the road.

Wendy’s

Safest item: Frosty. If you have the lung capacity to eat/drink it through a straw, it’s pretty safe.

Least safe item: Chili. There is no way you should be eating this behind the wheel.

Hardee’s

Safest item: Buffalo Boneless Wings. You might need to lick your fingers, but the safest choice on this messy menu.

Least safe item: Pork Chop and Gravy Biscuit. A nightmare if you try and eat this while driving.

Arby’s

Safest item: Curly Fries. You can’t get a safer item at Arby’s.

Least safe item: Beef ‘N Cheddar. Thw cheddar makes is messy while driving.

Sonic

Safest item: Tater Tots. One of the few safe choices on this huge menu.

Least safe item: Chili Cheese Coney. If you’ve ever eaten a chili, cheese dog, you know why it’s not safe while driving.

Krystal

Safest item: Corn Pups. Small and safe.

Least safe item: Original Scrambler. This needs to be eaten with care and utensils.

Checkers

Safest item: Chicken Tenders. Again, if you forgo dipping sauce, a safe choice.

Least safe item: Buffalo Wings. At a tailgate these are great, driving on Ga. 400, not so much.

Kentucky Fried Chicken

Safest item: KFC Go Cup. The company is putting our safety first with tenders and fries easily stored and accessed.

Least safe item: Chicken Pot Pie. While one of my favorites, it should be savored while sitting at a table.

Popeye’s

Safest item: Popcorn Shrimp. Skip the cocktail sauce and it’s a pretty safe choice.

Least safe item: Red Beans and Rice. Once again, if you need utensils, don’t eat it and drive.

Steak ‘n’ Shake

Safest item: Grilled Cheese Sandwich. Perhaps the least messy sandwich around.

Least safe item: 7x7 Steakburger. Seven layers of beef and cheese are virtually impossible to eat, even when not driving.

Again, I don’t condone eating and driving, but if you are going to do it, make the safer choice.
