A 10-year-old girl is in the hospital after a car hit her as she ran across the street, police said.

The child was trying to get to one of her siblings on the other side when she was hit Wednesday afternoon on East Avenue in Cedartown, witnesses told the Georgia State Patrol.

Her mom motioned for her to come back when she darted across the road, authorities said.

“She almost got struck in the westbound lane, made it across the continuous left turn lane, and was struck in the head when she entered into the eastbound lane,” the GSP said in a statement.

The girl was taken to a Rome hospital, Cedartown police Chief James C. Newsome Jr. said. Her status was not known Thursday.

No charges were filed against the driver, who remained on the scene.

No other details were released.
