Forsyth County commissioners have approved a road map to the future, updating the county comprehensive plan for 2017 to 2037.

The “Foster Forsyth” document OK’d at a commission meeting is meant to guide the county on land use and development decisions, focusing on transportation, housing, zoning and economic development.

The final document divides the county into 11 “character areas” and 13 nodes within that structure that define each area’s role. Each node will grouped around what are being called activity centers, which will vary in form and density. It also takes a nuts-and-bolts look at policies designed to promote those general goals. As a final change based on an April hearing, commissioners tweaked guidelines for mixed-use districts.

It also projects the county’s population as about 361,000 by 2037.

The comprehensive update was orchestrated by the Jacobs consultant team in association with Kimley-Horn, and began with public meetings and workshops in 2016. It passed a state and regional review this spring.
