City of Decatur officials announced recently that The Milagros Collective, based out of Lakeland, Fla., is painting and helping design the mural on the MARTA overpass at West Trinity Place and Atlanta Avenue.

Milagros is comprised of Felici Asteinza and Joey Fillastre, selected from 28 finalists, eventually cut to five who interviewed with the project’s steering committee.

According their website Asteinza’s and Fillastre’s “intuitive way of working combines the context of a space and its history with color and intricate patterns … The objective of MILAGROS is to reinforce individual strength through collaboration.”

Linda Harris, assistant director for community and economic development, said at least two community engagement sessions are scheduled with the artists to initiate the collaboration process, the first in May.

The mural will cover both sides of the overpass and its support beams. Built in the late 1970s, the overpass spans a district that for much of the 20th century was a thriving African-American business/residential district.

It’s anticipated the work will finish by early November.
