A request by the city of Fayetteville to annex 44 acres at the intersection of Ellis Road and Banks Road in unincorporated Fayette County has been denied by the Board of Commissioners.

The board voted 3-1-1 on Feb. 8 against the measure, which also would have rezoned the property to allow 162 townhomes/condominiums to be built. Commissioner Steve Brown said such high-density development would exacerbate traffic congestion.

Fayetteville Mayor Edward Johnson said his staff was capable of managing such growth.

Further discussion is planned between the city and the developer to consider alternatives.
